Job Opportunities

Part Time Animal Care/Humane Care Officer

Reports to: Animal Services Supervisor
Scope of Position:Responsible for providing humane animal care and control for contracted municipalities within Rock County. Responsible for ensuring proper cleaning protocols for all kennel areas as well as the shelter as a whole. Provide counseling and education for the general public regarding RCHS policies and animal welfare issues when appropriate. Ensure alert and timely notification of any animal or shelter related issues to supervisory staff. This is a part-time position.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

A. Daily Animal Care

  1. Clean and maintain all animal kennels in a timely manner, providing proper animal husbandry while following approved procedures and using appropriate products.
  2. Feed all animals their required diet and in the appropriate rations.
  3. Handle animals in a safe and humane manner.
  4. Promote the mental health of the animals by providing enrichment to include utilizing exercise areas/walks, activities, and human companionship.
  5. Complete daily health and behavior observations of all animals.
  6. Assist with lost pet identification to increase redemptions.
  7. Participate in behavior shaping/training of animals to enhance their adoptability.
  8. Ensure that all animals have blankets or appropriate bedding and toys at all times.
  9. Ensure all dishes, laundry, and animal carriers are sanitized daily.

 

B. Animal Care and Control with the Public

  1. Comply with all RCHS policies, procedures, and protocols.
  2. Field general inquiries from public, always maintaining a calm and courteous manner.
  3. Stray animal pick-up and intake to the shelter during shelter hours and after hours.
  4. Transport of shelter animals as directed.
  5. Maintain vehicles and shelter property in a clean and presentable manner.
  6. Monitor cruelty and neglect complaints and make court appearances when required.
  7. Observe RCHS dress code.
  8. Other duties as required.

 

C. Internal Communications

  1. Advise appropriate shelter staff about animal medical or behavioral concerns.
  2. Monitor inventory of supplies and notify appropriate personnel when supplies are needed.
  3. Enter all information into the computer as necessary. Keep all paperwork and addendums updated and accurate.
  4. Answer questions from other staff and volunteers in a calm and courteous manner.
  5. Communicate effectively and completely on all documentation, including date, time, and initials for every note or memo written.

 

D. Administrative

  1. Compile and maintain accurate files on all animals.
  2. Answer phones promptly and professionally, routing calls to the appropriate personnel and providing general information to the public.
  3. Compile and maintain proper documentation on all paperwork.
  4. Enter and retrieve information on computer.
  5. Ensure the cleanliness and organization of assigned work areas, including daily removal of trash and clutter, and restocking of supplies.
  6. Maintain entire shelter in a clean and orderly manner.
  7. Repair or report any broken or damaged equipment in a timely manner.
  8. Restock all work areas.
  9. Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  1. High school or equivalent education with advanced animal training and experience preferred.
  2. Acquire and possess a thorough understanding of - and dedication to - the philosophies of animal welfare.
  3. Basic knowledge and ability to understand aspects of disease and the causes and treatment of animal-related problems.
  4. Critical evaluation and observation skills.
  5. Computer literate.
  6. Good public relations and communications skills.
  7. Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
  8. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds safely.
  9. Must be able to perform repetitive tasks.
  10. Understand and support the values, philosophies, and policies of Rock County Humane Society.
  11. Previous kennel experience required.
