Your new bird may be shy and nervous while he or she is adjusting to new surroudings, sounds, and faces. There are some steps you can take to help the bird feel more at ease. We suggest the following:
- Try to make the ride home as comfortable for the bird as possible. Avoid jerking motions and place a towel (or blanket if the weather is cold) over the cage or carrying case - of course allowing for fresh air.
- Try to have the bird's new cage already set up before you bring him or her home.
- Introduce the bird to his or her new cage slowly. Respect your bird's need to become adapted to your new home at his or her own pace.
- Keep your new bird separate from other birds in your home for 30 days or for however long your avian veterinarian deems necessary. This is recommended to protect your birds from any potential illnesses your new bird may have.
- Keep the cage in a quiet area where it can be kept separate from too many intrustions. Allow just a minimum number of people to look at and touch the bird until he or she feels more comfortable in your home.
